So there WERE backgrounds, but then Painter pooped out on me, so just pretend you can tell DarkMagicalGirl is taunting from a nearby rooftop. Or somewhere high up. So that panel 4's perspective makes sense. I guess.
Today's monster comes from Seminole lore (I've also seen it attributed to Creek Indians but that makes sense as the tribes were right next to each other in South Florida). The stikini looks like a person except they can throw up their innards and shift into some kind of owlman. In this form they hunt down unsuspecting victims and "draw out their heart". I have no idea what that means. Do they physically reach for it through your mouth or chest? Does it just kinda slip out as they will it? I don't know. So when they're all done with that they'll sneak back to their guts and stuff those back in and no one's the wiser.
It was the only thing I could think of offhand that ate people's hearts! Happy LOVE DAY!

DON'T GIVE UP BLACK MAGICAL GIRL-I MEAN MAGICAL GIRL YEAH THAT'S IT.
I think owls are kind of cute, so I think that would be the only humanoid beast I wouldn't run away screaming from automatically. Until it throws up its guts that is; then I'd be gone man. Man, I had no idea Native American lore could cough up so many fantastic beasts-certainly a lot of material for magical girl fights! That's pretty cool! As for the 'draw out the heart' conundrum, maybe it's even in a metaphysical, embodyment of your emotions sense and you become a cold, heartless jerk? I'm trying my best not to think too hard about that scene in Elfen Lied when I try to think of a more literal interpretation.
I must say I love all the poses in this one, especially the tradmark Dragonfly "OHSHIFT" pose at the top that makes the next three all the more memorable. Though the bottom one is my favorite just because it looks so dang badass.

Native American lore can get pretty wacky! Well, the stikini does eat the hearts, so I think that lends itself more to a physical representation. Unless you take that symbolically as well. Woah.
The trademark OHSHIFT pose is because people look so static when running! Even in photos! I haven't quite figured out an illustrative way to force some motion into that, dang. So exaggerate away!
Same with fight scenes! You pause fights in movies and animated scenes and it's like, "WHAT this looks ridiculous without motion!" And then you look in comic books and it's like, "This doesn't really make sense, but it does LOOK good!" So last panel is good, great!
I was going to say that maybe they did it at the same time, but then again I figured out if it does eat your heart out it would be very difficult to feel any warmth of human emotion, so mystery solved! Not that a strictly literal or symbolic intepretation wouldn't stand alone as creepy in their own rights.
AGREED, though I always thought that typical walking was just as bad in that regard. One can bend limbs in all sorts of fantastic possitions and it will look somewhat dynamic to someone, but when I try to make someone simply walking it looks either like their crossing their legs or just a moron. You'd think simple movement would equal simple to draw but I just keep tripping on it for some reason!
Ah, definately agree with you there-those insane backflips and air kicks and such must look ridiculous out of context.
